September 13, 2022 - Ukrainian forces have made sweeping territorial gains in the northeastern Kharkiv region, handing Russia its most serious military defeat since its troops were driven back from Kyiv in the spring.

Ukraine’s lightning counter-offensive has recaptured 3,800 square kilometres (1,467 square miles) of territory in the Kharkiv region since Sept. 6, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The counter-offensive has stunned Russia, which invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. News of battlefield defeats provoked unusual rumblings of dissent on Russian state television channels, Reuters said.
