July 29, 2022 - Ukraine is stepping up a counter-offensive in the south as Russia-backed separatists in the east say that at least 40 prisoners of war captured during the fighting for Mariupol have been killed by Ukrainian shelling.

Ukraine said its planes struck five Russian strongholds around Kherson and another nearby city on Thursday, the focus of its biggest counter-offensive of the conflict, Reuters reports.
Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine say that at least 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war captured during the fighting for Mariupol have been killed by Ukrainian shelling.
A spokesman for the Russia-backed separatists in the Donetsk region said that 130 Ukrainian prisoners were also injured Friday when Ukrainian shelling hit a prison in the town of Olenivka.
